Sherrill Highlights New Research on Job Creation Related to Hudson River Tunnel Project

April 29, 2024

Livingston, NJ — Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) released the following statement highlighting new research conducted by the Regional Plan Association (RPA) that found that the Hudson River Tunnel Project, a key part of the Gateway Program, will create 95,000 jobs. This is 20,000 more jobs than previously estimated.

“The new report by RPA underscores the mission I’ve pursued since I first entered Congress: investing in our infrastructure to foster economic opportunity. The Gateway Program will not only expand transportation access and lower costs for New Jersey residents, it will also generate almost a hundred thousand new good-paying jobs. It's a win-win for our region and our nation. I am proud to have helped secure the federal resources and approvals that are making this possible and will continue to be a fierce advocate for this project until it is completed,” said Rep. Sherrill.

Since first entering office, one of Congresswoman Sherrill’s top priorities has been to complete the Gateway Tunnel Project, the nation’s most critical infrastructure project. She led advocacy and voted for the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which provides $66 billion in funding for passenger rail projects. She testified in front of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee in both 2019 and 2021 to urge them to include full funding for Gateway, and led outreach in 2023 to FRA Administrator Bose in strong support of grants for the first project within Gateway. She led letters to Transportation Secretary Buttigieg in 2021 and 2022 urging the rapid completion of Gateway’s Environmental Impact Statement and other approvals.
