Representative Mikie Sherrill Applauds Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Biden Administration on Gateway Tunnel Commitment

March 26, 2021

Parsippany, NJ -- Today, Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) applauded Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on his announcement that he's committed to completing the long-stalled environmental impact study that continues to delay the Gateway Tunnel Project.

"The Gateway Tunnel project is America's most urgent infrastructure project. It's not just crucial to New Jersey and New York, but to the economy of the entire country" said. Rep. Sherrill. "This project is a transformational infrastructure improvement for America's busiest rail corridor. It will offer resiliency and efficiency to the system that keeps the entire economy moving. I've fought for it since my first day in Congress, and I'm thrilled after four years of obstruction from the last administration, Secretary Buttigieg and the Biden administration are committed to working to complete the nation's most important infrastructure project."

Currently, a century-old Hudson river tunnel connects 200,000 commuters every day from New Jersey and New York. Amtrak uses it to connect 20 train routes across the country. Considered the Achilles heel of the Northeast Rail Corridor, it was severely damaged during Superstorm Sandy. A shutdown of the tunnel could cost the US economy $16 billion over 4 years. The Gateway Tunnel project would modernize and improve the northeast corridor system and minimize the risk of a potentially catastrophic failure that would impact the entire country.
