Sherrill Applauds Continued Movement on the Tonnelle Avenue Bridge Component of the Gateway Tunnel Project

November 30, 2023

Parsippany, NJ— Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) released the following statement as Deputy Secretary of Transportation Polly Ellen Trottenberg visited New Jersey today to kick off construction on the Tonnelle Avenue Bridge and Utility Relocation Project, a key part of the Gateway Tunnel Project.

“Our nation’s most critical infrastructure project—the Gateway Tunnel—is the result of key federal funding delivered by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, in strong partnership with the New Jersey and New York state governments. I was proud to support this historic legislation and will continue working hard to ensure that the entire Gateway Project is completed both quickly and cost-effectively to make New Jersey an even better place to live, work, and raise a family,” said Rep. Sherrill.

Since first taking office, Rep. Sherrill made it a priority to secure the federal funding and administrative approvals necessary to complete the Gateway Tunnel Project. This critical project will deliver a return on investment of almost $4 in transportation, congestion, and health benefits for every $1 in costs and will ensure that the Hudson River Tunnel doesn’t suffer a devastating shutdown that would cost our economy $16 billion.
