Sherrill Applauds Pause in Congestion Pricing Double Tax, Pushes for Long-Term Transit Solutions

June 5, 2024

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) released the following statement after New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the Metropolitan Transportation Authority would be halting its congestion pricing plan:

“I’ve been opposed to this attack on New Jersey commuters for years and expressed this to Gov. Hochul when I spoke with her at the State of the Union in March. I’m happy to see that she is finally hearing what I and everyone on this side of the river has been saying for years – New York’s congestion pricing scheme is an unfair double tax on New Jersey families that fails to invest in critical public transit infrastructure and ignores potential negative environmental impacts here in the Garden State, especially among communities with historic rates of underinvestment.

“As I’ve said from the start, New York and New Jersey should work together to develop a new strategy that fairly invests in public transportation like NJ Transit, reduces pollution in an equitable and effective manner, and bolsters our regional economy – without punishing Garden State commuters and families. That requires real leadership, not stunts or lopsided attacks on New Jersey.”

Sherrill has consistently fought back against New York’s congestion pricing plan that will raise costs for New Jersey commuters. In May 2023, she led a bipartisan letter to New York Governor Kathy Hochul urging her to cancel the pending implementation of the plan. In June 2023, Sherrill called upon the State of New Jersey to sue New York over congestion pricing, which Gov. Murphy did in July. Also in June 2023, Sherrill submitted a comment to the Department of Transportation on New York’s Congestion Pricing Environmental Assessment that expressed her significant concerns with how the plan will impact New Jersey residents.
