Sherrill Signs Discharge Petition To Force Vote on National Security Supplemental
Washington, DC — Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11), a leading advocate in Congress to support Ukraine’s fight for democracy, signed a discharge petition to bring the Senate-passed national security supplemental legislative package to the House floor for a vote, after resistance from the House GOP majority.
“Speaker Johnson has failed to meet the urgency of this moment and pass the legislation we need to maintain America’s global leadership and our responsibility to our democratic allies. In the military, we had a saying that the Speaker should take to heart: lead, follow, or get out of the way. Let’s be clear – there is no time to waste: Ukraine is already forced to ration ammunition for everything from cannon artillery to small arms, all while Russia works to subvert sanctions and ramp up their military production. So today, we are moving forward to get critical aid to Ukraine to continue their success against Putin’s invasion, protect our ally Israel from Hamas and Hezbollah attacks, ensure humanitarian aid reaches innocent Palestinian civilians, and support Taiwan from CCP aggression. If Speaker Johnson and MAGA Republicans refuse to act, history will judge them harshly and the impact to American national security will be felt for generations to come,” said Rep. Sherrill.
A discharge petition is a procedural tool that would force a vote on the legislation once it receives 218 signatures. Rep. Sherrill is continuing to make the case to Republican colleagues about supporting Ukraine in the face of Russia’s brutal invasion.
Congresswoman Sherrill is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and served in the Navy for almost 10 years as a helicopter pilot and Russian policy officer. As a Russian policy officer, she worked on implementing our nuclear treaty obligations and oversaw the relationship between the US Navy and Russian Federation Navy. She now serves on the House Armed Services Committee and the new House Select Committee on Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
