Sherrill Joins Gateway Commission for Tour of Hudson River Tunnel Construction

HOBOKEN, NJ – Today, Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) joined Gateway Development Commission CEO Kris Kolluri and Balpreet Grewal-Virk, Gateway New Jersey Commissioner and Co-Chair, for a tour of construction in the Hudson River, as well as on both the New Jersey and New York sides of the project.
Sherrill has been a staunch advocate for the Gateway Project since first taking office, and most recently, helped the Gateway Development Commission secure a full funding agreement with the Federal Transit Administration, which will ensure that the federal government covers 70% of the cost of this project.
“From the Portal North Bridge to the Hudson River Tunnel, I am so excited to see that construction is well underway on Gateway, our nation’s most important infrastructure project. Today, it was great to hear from Gateway Commission representatives while we toured the ground stabilization projects going on under the Hudson River.”
“Years ago, I was called the “Tunnel Obsessed Congresswoman” – which speaks to the relentlessness with which I pushed to secure federal funding to get this project moving again. I will keep fighting to move this project forward, and with it, reduce traffic congestion and air pollution, improve the quality of life for New Jersey families, bolster our region’s economy, and bring good-paying jobs back to our state,” said Rep. Sherrill.
Since first entering office, one of Congresswoman Sherrill’s top priorities has been to complete the Gateway Tunnel Project, the nation’s most critical infrastructure project. Sherrill fought to secure a full funding agreement between New Jersey, New York, and the Federal Transit Administration and a 70-30 cost sharing agreement with the federal government. She led advocacy and voted for the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which provides $66 billion in funding for passenger rail projects. She testified in front of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee in both 2019 and 2021 to urge them to include full funding for Gateway, and led outreach in 2023 to FRA Administrator Bose in strong support of grants for the first project within Gateway. She also led letters to Transportation Secretary Buttigieg in 2021 and 2022 urging the rapid completion of Gateway’s Environmental Impact Statement and other approvals.
