Sherrill – Once Called the “Tunnel Obsessed Congresswoman” – Fought Tirelessly to Deliver Federal Funding for Gateway

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) released the following statement applauding a full funding agreement reached between New Jersey, New York, and the federal government to support the Gateway Tunnel Project:

“Today’s announcement means more good-paying, union jobs are coming to New Jersey. Since day one, I’ve fought tooth and nail to secure federal funding to build the Gateway Tunnel, which will bring our infrastructure into the 21st century and improve the quality of life and economic opportunities for millions of families in our region. Despite sabotage from the Trump Administration, I’m so proud that our nation’s most important infrastructure project will now move full speed ahead with a historic funding commitment from the Biden Administration.”

“From reducing traffic and air pollution, to lowering commute times, to ensuring our public transit is reliable so parents can make it home to coach their kids’ soccer teams, the Gateway Tunnel’s impact on New Jersey families will be immense. I want to thank Transportation Secretary Buttigieg, the Federal Transit Association, and my colleagues in the New Jersey and New York Congressional delegations for their continued commitment to securing the largest grant for mass-transit in history.”

Since first entering office, one of Congresswoman Sherrill’s top priorities has been to complete the Gateway Tunnel Project, the nation’s most critical infrastructure project. She led advocacy and voted for the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which provides $66 billion in funding for passenger rail projects. She testified in front of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee in both 2019 and 2021 to urge them to include full funding for Gateway, and led outreach in 2023 to FRA Administrator Bose in strong support of grants for the first project within Gateway. She led letters to Transportation Secretary Buttigieg in 2021 and 2022 urging the rapid completion of Gateway’s Environmental Impact Statement and other approvals.
