Sherrill Applauds Biden’s Support for Critical SCOTUS Reforms

LIVINGSTON, N.J. – Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) released the following statement regarding President Biden’s decision to support long overdue Supreme Court reforms:

“Supreme Court justices take an oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States – and it’s long past time they’re held accountable for living up to that commitment. I applaud the President’s decision to publicly support long overdue reforms – including term limits and an enforceable ethics code – that would help restore the American people’s confidence in the court.

“It has been a race to the bottom as the Court has overturned national abortion protections, rolled back gun safety measures, allowed unlimited dark money in politics, and weakened the right to vote. To raise the stakes even higher, the MAGA majority ruled former President Trump above the rule of law – all in the name of making Donald Trump a dictator on day one.

“Congress must take action by passing my Supreme Court Ethics and Investigations Act, which would restore public trust and hold the Court accountable for being an impartial arbiter of justice.”

Congresswoman Sherrill has been at the forefront of efforts to restore public trust in the Supreme Court. She is a cosponsor of theSupreme Court Ethics, Recusal, and Transparency Act, theSupreme Court Tenure Establishment and Retirement Modernization (TERM) Act, the High Court Gift Ban Act, and a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United. 

Prior to serving in Congress, she prosecuted federal cases and advised law enforcement on investigations as an Assistant United States Attorney in the District of New Jersey. She also served as an Outreach and Re-Entry Coordinator who created programs to develop trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
