MADISON, N.J. – Yesterday, Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11), former federal prosecutor, and Congressman Jamie Raskin (MD-08), Ranking Member of the House Oversight Committee and former constitutional law professor, sat down for a conversation about defending our democracy, securing America’s democratic institutions from future insurrection attempts, and the need for robust Supreme Court ethics reform. The Representatives were joined by the family of the fallen U.S. Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick.
“I was so proud to welcome Congressman Jamie Raskin to New Jersey’s 11th District. We were joined by leaders from across our community to discuss our shared work in Congress to restore public trust in the Supreme Court, hold the architects and perpetrators of January 6th accountable for their actions, and work to build a fairer, more equal future for all,” said Rep. Sherrill. “As Donald Trump and MAGA extremists try to co-opt our democratic institutions for their personal and political gain, it’s more important than ever that we work to uphold the integrity of the Supreme Court, protect our rights at the ballot box, and stand up for women’s reproductive freedoms.”
“It was a true honor to join Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey to discuss the defense of democratic freedom in America,” said Rep. Raskin. “I’m proud to work closely with Rep. Sherrill in the House to protect the Constitution and the rule of law. Every day, we try to hold the Supreme Court to even minimal ethical standards, to fortify our democratic institutions against threats of insurrection and fraud, and to fight for the essential liberties of the people. I look forward to continuing to work together closely to defend democracy and deliver on the common good for the people of New Jersey’s Eleventh District, Maryland’s Eighth District and all of America.”
Representatives Sherrill and Raskin have urged Chief Justice John Roberts to establish an independent investigative arm of the Supreme Court and strengthen ethical standards for the justices. Their efforts come in direct response to Justice Clarence Thomas taking lavish gifts from MAGA donor billionaires and Justice Samuel Alito flying insurrectionist symbols over his homes in New Jersey and Northern Virginia.
Congresswoman Sherrill prosecuted federal cases and advised law enforcement on investigations as an Assistant United States Attorney in the District of New Jersey. She also served as an Outreach and Re-Entry Coordinator who created programs to develop trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
Congressman Jamie Raskin is the U.S. Representative for Maryland’s 8th Congressional District. He serves as the Ranking Member on the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability. He served as the Lead House Manager in the second Senate impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump, which ended with a 57-43 vote to convict the president for inciting a violent insurrection against the government to overthrow the 2020 presidential election. Raskin also served on the Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol. Prior to Congress, Raskin was a three-term State Senator in Maryland and a professor of constitutional law for more than a quarter-century at American University Washington College of Law.
