Mental Health and Social Services Resources

With high levels of anxiety, as well as the isolation that comes from social distancing, everyone will need to take care of themselves not only physically but mentally.

I held a telephone town hall focused on mental health resources alongside, Bob Davison, CEO, Mental Health Association of Essex and Morris, Dr. Deb Koss, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and Immediate Past President of the NJ Psychiatric Association, Fred Douglas, School Counselor at Parsippany High School and President of the Morris County Professional Counselor Association, and Dr. Charlene Gungil, Director & Health Officer of the Passaic County Department of Health Services.

The Mental Health Association of Essex and Morris Counties (which serves all four counties in NJ-11) has information and helpful links for "Coping with COVID" on their website, https://www.mhaessexmorris.org/covid-19/, including resources for how to talk to your children about COVID-19 and links to virtual addiction recovery support groups.

Click here for MHA CEO Bob Davidson's presentation from our telephone town hall on March 27, 2020.

Some of the ways the MHA suggests you help cope during this time are:

  • Connect with family and friends by phone, e-mail, or social media;
  • Partake in activities that are soothing: take a warm bath; practice deep breathing; cook comfort foods;
  • Distract yourself by doing activities that keep you busy: gardening; doing art work. Listen to music and watch comedy movies that will make you laugh and lighten your mood;
  • Limit your news and media intake;
  • Go out in the fresh air and take a walk. Walking is one of the best exercises to help mitigate anxiety;
  • Keep a schedule and stay as close to your typical routine as possible. This will help you to have a sense of control and bring some normalcy to your day;
  • Remember that THIS WILL COME TO AN END as every other pandemic that has ever happened in history has and that your lives will return again to normal.
