VIDEO: Sherrill Questions Experts on Combating Misinformation in the Global Information Space

December 1, 2023

Select Committee Hearing Focused on CCP's Broader Strategy Regarding Propaganda, Censorship, and Disinformation

Washington, DC — Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) questioned technology experts at the latest hearing held by the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the U.S. and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The hearing entitled “Discourse Power: The CCP's Strategy to Shape the Global Information Space” focused on the CCP’s efforts to influence American public opinion and alter discourse through technology and social media to serve their interests and how the U.S. can respond more effectively.

Watch the Congresswoman’s remarks and questions here.

“Today, the CCP has significant influence over a key source of information for millions of Americans through TikTok, the CCP exports anti-US content to billions of people across the globe through print and digital media, and the CCP uses the economic power of the Chinese market to build self-censorship right here at home. It is long past time that Congress address the CCP’s misinformation and propaganda efforts before it is too late. We must take steps to ensure that key digital and social media sources aren’t controlled by a hostile foreign actor, that free and fair media coverage reaches billions of people worldwide, and that Americans at home aren’t fearful of the consequences of speaking out against CCP abuses,” said Rep. Sherrill at the hearing.

The experts at last night’s hearing include:

  • Mr. John Garnaut, Founder of Garnaut Global;

  • Dr. Miles Yu, Senior Fellow & Director of China Center at the Hudson Institute; and

  • Ms. Yaqiu Wang, Research Director for China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan at Freedom House.

As a member of the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the CCP, Representative Sherrill is working to bolster our nation’s defense, re-shore American manufacturing, strengthen our supply chains, and lower costs for families.
