Statement by Rep. Mikie Sherrill on Vote to Avoid a Government Shutdown

September 30, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) released the following statement on her vote for a bipartisan continuing resolution to avoid a reckless government shutdown:

“I’m relieved to see that after months of encouraging my Republican colleagues to break with far-right, MAGA extremists and work with House Democrats on a bipartisan solution, we were able to pass a resolution to avert a disastrous government shutdown. This temporary funding resolution will keep the government open and ensure that federal employees, our troops, and law enforcement don’t miss their paychecks.

“But we have more work to do, including passing the critical Ukraine supplemental. I pray that this agreement ushers in a new path forward for the House. It’s time for Speaker McCarthy to end his path of appeasing those who would rather score political points than govern our great nation. It’s time for members of the House to come together and find solutions to the tough problems facing our nation.

“As we saw today, the majority of Members stand ready to do so. House Republicans now have a choice: work with Democrats and responsibly govern, or continue to appease extremists in the Republican Party as you undermine the economy, harm families, and imperil our national security.”
