Statement by Rep. Mikie Sherrill on the Reported Death of Alexei Navalny

February 16, 2024

MUNICH, GERMANY — Today, Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) released the following statement on the reports of Alexei Navalny’s death in Russian prison:

"This morning, as the world heard reports that Alexei Navalny died in prison, I heard a message of resilience from his wife, Yulia, at the Munich Security Conference.

“As we wait for additional confirmation from U.S. intelligence, one thing is clear – Alexei Navalny represents a beacon of hope and freedom for the Russian people. Putin, like all craven autocrats, did what he always does – kill the person who stood up to his tyranny. The world must come together to give Putin a message: murder, whether to silence dissent or to capture territory, will not stand.”

Congresswoman Sherrill is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and served in the Navy for almost 10 years as a helicopter pilot and Russian policy officer. As a Russian policy officer, she worked on implementing our nuclear treaty obligations and oversaw the relationship between the US Navy and Russian Federation Navy. She now serves on the House Armed Services Committee and the new House Select Committee on Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
