Statement by Mikie Sherrill on the President’s Order to Halt Federal Funding to New Jersey

January 28, 2025

LIVINGSTON — Today, Rep. Mikie Sherrill released the following statement after the Trump Administration placed a pause on federal grants and assistance to states:

“The administration’s announcement is a gut punch to New Jersey taxpayers and will inject chaos into our state’s economy. It not only violates the law, but also threatens a wide range of projects already underway — from Gateway Tunnel construction and flood remediation, to law enforcement hiring and NJ TRANSIT repairs. The state and municipalities across New Jersey have already made investments that rely on federal partnership only to be stiffed by the president on a whim. This is completely unacceptable.

“This will harm families, raise costs, and severely disrupt the day-to-day lives of New Jerseyans. It means stalled infrastructure projects that increase commute times, fewer mental health resources for our kids and veterans in crisis, missed paychecks for union workers, and seniors going hungry without food assistance from Meals on Wheels.

“These are the people’s tax dollars, not the president’s. Congress passed these laws and the president needs to reverse course immediately to keep our economy moving forward. Otherwise, I urge the Attorney General to take immediate action on behalf of New Jersey taxpayers.”
