Sherrill Statement on U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo’s Visit to the People’s Republic of China
MONTCLAIR, NJ — Today, Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) — a member of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the U.S. and the Chinese Communist Party — released the following statement after U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo’s visit to the People’s Republic of China:
“While our national security is not negotiable, as Sec. Raimondo emphasized, it’s critical to have a candid diplomatic dialogue with the PRC to avoid rising tensions and to raise issues that impact New Jersey businesses.
“Too often, I hear from businesses and labor organizations in New Jersey that they have been targeted by the Chinese Communist Party’s economic interference and unfair trade practices. I applaud Sec. Raimondo for effectively raising these concerns directly with leaders in the PRC and for establishing a working group to find solutions to trade and investment issues that are consistent challenges for U.S. companies and workers in China.
“It’s long past time that we take action to counter the CCP’s consistent economic aggression, which has escalated in recent months with their brazen raids on American companies and the passage of a deeply concerning, so-called Counter-Espionage Law. That’s why I was proud to help pass the CHIPS and Science Act, which strengthened our supply chains and has helped create a manufacturing boom in New Jersey and the rest of the country.
“I appreciate Sec. Raimondo’s partnership and leadership — both at home and abroad — to further American competitiveness and to protect our economic and national security.”
As a member of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the CCP, Congresswoman Sherrill is fighting to reshore American manufacturing, ensure New Jersey is a place where businesses can thrive, and lower costs for families.
