Sherrill Statement on H.R. 9495

November 12, 2024

WASHINGTON, DC – Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) released the following statement regarding her vote on H.R. 9495, the Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act:

“Tonight, I voted against H.R. 9495, legislation that would give Donald Trump additional pathways to weaponize our federal government and target his political enemies.

“Let me be clear: I will always stand up for Americans detained abroad. Any organization that is aiding terrorist organizations – including Hamas – in harming us and our allies should be held accountable. I have been in close touch with the families of hostages held by Hamas and will continue to support them and work towards a resolution that brings their loved ones home safely and holds the funders of terror accountable.

“This legislation does not get us closer to that goal, rather, it would allow Trump unchecked power and grant his executive agencies the right to harass nonprofit organizations he disagrees with — bringing politically motivated investigations and stripping them of their tax-exempt status — to carry out his vindictive political agenda.”
