Sherrill Presses Administration Officials on Path Forward for U.S. Diplomatic, Security, and Economic Engagement with China

Washington, DC — Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) questioned Biden Administration officials yesterday on their plans to strengthen our investments in domestic innovation and critical supply chains, elevate the role of the Department of Commerce within our Indo-Pacific strategy, and expand our economic partnerships with allies in the Indo-Pacific and Europe to counter moves by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Yesterday’s hearing, held by the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the CCP, focused on the Biden’s Administration’s strategy for engaging and competing with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in the economic, diplomatic, and security spheres.

“Over the past two years, this Administration and Congress have enacted historic pieces of legislation - such as the CHIPS and Science Act and Inflation Reduction Act - that have led to an unprecedented reshoring of US manufacturing and de-risking of our critical supply chains from China. I greatly appreciate the work of the Defense, State, and Commerce Departments in strengthening America’s position on the world stage and in the global economy, but there is still more work to be done to counter the CCP’s threat to the democratic world and to build new supply chains for key materials such as critical minerals,” said Rep. Sherrill.
The witnesses at the hearing included:
Dr. Ely Ratner, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs
Mr. Dan Kritenbrink, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs
Ms. Thea D. Rozman Kendler, Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Export Administration at the Bureau of Industry and Security
