Sherrill Praises New Measures to Close the Gun Show Loophole
Washington, DC — Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) released a statement today praising the Biden administration’s new actions to close the gun show loophole. These are safety measures that Sherrill has long advocated for, and she voted to enact them as part of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act she helped pass when House Democrats were in the majority.
“Background checks save lives. For too long, people have been able to slide through loopholes to avoid these critical safeguards if they purchased a firearm at a gun show or online. These new rules will crack down on unlicensed dealers and help prevent firearms from falling into nefarious hands on New Jersey streets. America is a dramatic outlier in our levels of gun violence in comparison to peer nations who have implemented laws that keep their citizens safe from this senseless violence. I applaud President Biden and his Administration's commitment to commonsense gun safety, as today, we are a step closer to addressing this devastating problem, bolstering public safety, and better protecting families and law enforcement,” said Rep. Sherrill.
Rep. Sherrill is a former Navy helicopter pilot and former federal prosecutor. She qualified as an expert shot in the rifle and pistol in the U.S. Navy. As a federal prosecutor, she worked to keep illegal guns off the streets of New Jersey. Rep. Sherrill is a member of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. The Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2021, which requires a background check for every gun purchase including online purchases and those made at gun shows, was the first bill that Rep. Sherrill cosponsored during her first term in Congress.
