Sherrill Meets with Commerce Secretary Raimondo to Discuss Efforts to Help New Jersey Businesses Compete and Succeed

November 30, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) met with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo. Sherrill, a member of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the U.S. and the Chinese Communist Party, discussed efforts to support New Jersey businesses on the global stage, crack down on unfair trade practices by the CCP, and deliver critical CHIPS and Science Act funding to manufacturers.

“I’m grateful to Secretary Raimondo for her extraordinary leadership at the Commerce Department – particularly through spearheading the implementation of the CHIPS and Science Act, which is critical to strengthening our supply chains and both our economic and national security. Building on that work and this quarter’s strong economic growth, I’m continuing to advocate for New Jersey job creators so they can compete on the global playing field – especially against rising aggression by the Chinese Communist Party,” said Rep. Sherrill.

The U.S. economy grew by more than 5 percent in the third quarter of 2023 – blowing past expectations – and inflation has dropped by more than 64 percent in the last year. Additionally, 2021 and 2022 were the two strongest years for New Jersey manufacturing jobs growth since 1990. This comes after Sherrill and House Democrats passed strategic economic investments like the CHIPS and Science Act, Inflation Reduction Act, and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to grow the economy, strengthen supply chains, and reduce the cost of living for families.

Building on this foundation, Sherrill announced the American Jobs and Competition Plan – a legislative package aiming to strengthen America’s economic and national security in the face of competition with CCP. So far, she has introduced the first two bills in the package. The first pillar of the plan, the Leading Global Innovation Resolution, is a call to action for the public, private, and nonprofit sectors on the CCP’s “Made in China 2025” plan, a state-led industrial policy that aims to make China the global leader in cutting-edge technology and innovation. The second pillar is the bipartisan Bolstering America’s Defenses Against Potentially Perilous Software (BAD APPS) Act. This legislation will protect our national security by ensuring that defense personnel have a better understanding of the potential risks of downloading certain apps onto their mobile devices.

In the coming months, Sherrill will introduce more legislation as part of the American Jobs and Competition Plan to combat the CCP’s unfair trade practices, boost the role of the Department of Commerce, and strengthen America’s partnerships and alliances.
