Sherrill Leads Select Committee Briefing on Challenges Facing Global Shipping and Supply Chains

February 16, 2024

WASHINGTON, DC – Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) led a roundtable briefing for members of the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the U.S. and Chinese Communist Party (CCP) focused on efforts to reshore American manufacturing and the need to protect global shipping and supply chains.

The roundtable featured testimony from Jens Eskelund, the Chief Representative for Maersk in Greater China and Northeast Asia, and Peter Levesque, the President & CEO of CMA CGM North America. Maersk’s North American headquarters are located in Florham Park, New Jersey.

“I am focused on leveling the playing field for New Jersey businesses and bringing good-paying manufacturing jobs back to the Garden State through my work on the Select Committee on Competition with the CCP,” said Rep. Sherrill. “With its North American headquarters in New Jersey’s 11th District, Maersk is a global leader in building resilient supply chains and protecting shipping lanes. I was glad to sit down for an important discussion on how the shipping industry and Congress can work together to bolster New Jersey’s economy.”

Following the roundtable, Rep. Sherrill met with Jens and Douglas Morgante from Maersk to discuss how the global shipping industry is working to adjust its supply chains and shipping lanes in response to attacks on freedom of navigation by the Iranian-backed Houthis. They also discussed how the Select Committee can support investments in critical US infrastructure and our port system to prevent the supply shocks and inflation seen during the COVID-19 pandemic.
