Sherrill Joins Court Fight to Defend New Jersey Consumers Against Donald Trump and Elon Musk
WASHINGTON, DC — Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11), member of the House Democrats’ Rapid Response Task Force and Litigation Working Group, joined an amicus brief last week in support of American consumers and the Consumer Financial Protection Board (CFPB) in National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU), et al. v. CFPB Acting Director Russell Vought, et al. before the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.
“The Consumer Financial Protection Board is critical to protecting New Jerseyans from being ripped off by big banks, loan servicers, debt collectors, and payday lenders who break the law. The CFPB has put money back into the pockets of families — including nearly $175 million to veterans and service members who had been victims of financial fraud. Now, Donald Trump and Elon Musk want to dismantle the CFPB to line their own pockets at the expense of working New Jersey families. I’m joining the legal fight and signed an amicus brief to support efforts to stop Trump and Musk’s attempt to dismantle the CFPB. I will continue to work as a member of the Rapid Response Task Force and Litigation Working Group to protect New Jerseyans from price gouging, hidden junk fees, and other attacks by Trump and his billionaire friends,” said Rep. Sherrill
In the brief, the House Democrats noted that recent actions toward the CFPB, the “consumer watchdog agency,” including the implementation of sweeping stop-work orders and plans to arbitrarily fire most employees, represent a blatant disregard for Congress’s role and express directives. These actions are in clear violation of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010, as well as the Constitution’s mandate that the laws be faithfully executed.
The CFPB is the only federal agency dedicated solely to protecting American consumers in the financial marketplace — and has returned over $21 billion to consumers who have been targeted by financial institutions since 2011. The lawmakers also underscored the threat that Trump’s actions pose to key operations that provide relief from a wide range of unlawful practices costing hardworking families billions. These include rulings promoting small business lending transparency, curbing excessive overdraft fees, and preventing medical debt from limiting creditworthy borrowers’ access to credit.
The amicus brief also references reports that President Trump and unelected and unaccountable members of his team have access to sensitive consumer data and critical systems within the CFPB.
