Sherrill Applauds Unanimous Support from House Energy and Commerce Committee Of Legislation that Eliminates CCP Control of TikTok
House to Vote on Sherrill’s Legislation Next Week
VIDEO: Sherrill Speaks on Urgent Need to Address Threat Posed by TikTok
Washington, DC — Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) released the following statement after the House Energy and Commerce Committee unanimously voted 50-0 to advance her bill, the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, which will strengthen U.S. national security and protect Americans on social media apps.
“I applaud the swift and overwhelmingly bipartisan action taken by the Energy and Commerce Committee yesterday to advance this critical piece of legislation. Now, I’m encouraged that the Majority Leader will bring the bill to the floor next week because all Americans deserve access to information and media platforms that are free from the influence of hostile foreign actors like the Chinese Communist Party. Since we’ve introduced this bill, TikTok has begun a campaign of lies to protect its enormous profits and obscure its direct link to the CCP. This only further underscores the critical need for this bill that would separate ByteDance from TikTok to protect the American people, our national security, and our children,” said Rep. Sherrill.
The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act creates a rules-based process by which the President can restrict the app store availability and access to U.S.-based web hosting services of foreign adversary-controlled social media applications, unless they sever ties to the foreign adversary controlled-company. At a press conference focused on this bill with fellow members of the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the CCP, Sherrill called on the Energy and Commerce Committee to advance the legislation as quickly as possible.
