Sherrill Applauds Nomination of Admiral Lisa Franchetti as Chief of Naval Operations
Parsippany, NJ — Today, Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) released the following statement after the announcement that Vice Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Lisa Franchetti will be nominated by President Biden for the Navy’s top job.
“I could not be in stronger support of Admiral Franchetti’s nomination. I served with Lisa at the Atlantic Fleet Headquarters when I was on active duty in the Navy and I know firsthand that the President could not have made a better choice. She is a leader with experience as a surface warfare officer, a strategic planner, and a former commander in both Europe and the Indo-Pacific. I am confident that Admiral Franchetti will step into the job ready to ensure the Navy’s role as the premier naval force in the world.
“Admiral Franchetti has been a trailblazer her entire career. As one of the few female four-star officers in U.S. history, as a sailor who was told from the start that high-ranking officers didn’t want to see women aboard their ships, as only the second female Vice Chief of Naval Operations, and now as the nominee to be the first female member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, she is used to breaking glass ceilings — and I look forward to seeing her lead the Navy fully into the 21st Century.
“This nomination could not come at a more critical time for the Navy and for women servicemembers while Senator Tuberville continues his dangerous hold on promotions in an attempt to restrict basic reproductive healthcare services. The Senate should move swiftly on Admiral Franchetti’s confirmation.”
Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and served in the Navy for almost a decade. After leaving the Navy, she went on to attend law school and eventually served at the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey. She currently represents New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District and is a member of the House Armed Services Committee.
