Rep. Sherrill Votes to Overturn the Muslim Ban

Washington, DC -- Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) today voted to pass the National Origin-Based Antidiscrimination for Nonimmigrants (NO BAN) Act. The NO BAN Act limits the President's authority to suspend or restrict foreign nationals from entering the United States, terminates certain presidential actions implementing such restrictions, and prohibits religious discrimination in various immigration-related decisions. The NO BAN Act allows for exceptions when the U.S. State Department determines credible threats to U.S. interests with a 48-hour reporting requirement to Congress. Representative Sherrill is a co-sponsor of the legislation and released the following statement after the vote:

"Religious freedom sits at the core of who we are as Americans. Not a week into his term, the president signed an executive order barring foreign nationals in majority-Muslim countries from entering the United States. Like so many Americans, I was deeply disturbed by this discriminatory action leveled by the president. It went against our founding principles and the values that I fought for in the Navy.

"We are a nation of immigrants. Some of the most important discoveries, innovations, and advances in our history have come from those seeking a new life in America.

"Here in North Jersey, our Muslim community is essential to our social fabric. The Jam-e-Masjid Islamic Center in Boonton, for example, has worked to build an interfaith community and has been one of the first to bring the community together in the aftermath of horrific tragedies like the shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue and the murder of George Floyd. They do not deserve the small-minded bigotry that has been directed at them by the Executive Branch.

"The NO BAN Act realigns American policy with American principles and reaffirms the ideals of our Constitution. I am proud to be a co-sponsor of this legislation and urge the Senate to stand with us."
