Rep. Sherrill Statement on Texas Federal Court Ruling in Key Medication Abortion Case

April 7, 2023

Washington, DC– Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) released the following statement in response to the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas’s ruling in Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA:

“This unprecedented ruling from an anti-abortion federal judge in Texas shows blatant disregard for scientific evidence and encroaches on the authority of the Food and Drug Administration. But let’s be clear: this lawsuit is not about safety– it’s a political attack on women’s ability to control their bodies and lives.

“Without the option of medication abortion using mifepristone, demand for procedural abortions could increase exponentially, causing clinics and providers to have much longer wait times and more costly logistics for patients. Fifty-four percent of abortions are medication abortions. This drug also plays a critical role in helping to treat miscarriages. Plainly put: women’s health will yet again be put at risk if this order goes into effect.

“Today is another dark day in our fight for reproductive freedom, but it cannot be the end of our efforts. While this case makes its way through the appeals process, I will continue to use every available resource to protect access to abortion care here in New Jersey, and across the country.”
