Rep. Sherrill Returns from Official Congressional Delegation To Egypt, Jordan, Israel, and Germany
Sherrill Met with Leaders Including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Livingston, NJ — Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) returned to the U.S. this week after a Congressional Delegation visit first to the Munich Security Conference in Germany; then to the Middle East, including stops in Egypt, Jordan, and Israel.
“Over the past few days, I’ve sat down with world leaders as we face an inflection point – as Speaker Johnson obstructs critical national security legislation, many wonder if America will rise to the challenge to support democracy and our values across the globe,” said Rep. Sherrill. “In Munich, I assured our allies the United States remains committed to our shared goal of supporting Ukraine and standing up to Putin’s brutal invasion. In the Middle East, I met with leaders in Egypt and Jordan to discuss regional support for easing tensions as we try to forge a path forward towards a two-state solution for Israelis and Palestinians. In Israel, I pressed leaders for more effective military strategies to counter and defeat Hamas while making clear the need to protect the lives of Palestinian civilians – and substantially increase the amount of humanitarian aid being delivered into Gaza. What’s clear to me is that we need to do everything we can to reach a negotiated ceasefire to free all of the remaining hostages and ensure longer lasting security and stability in the region. American leadership is essential as we address these challenges and stand with those fighting for democracy and freedom.”
In Munich, Representative Sherrill participated in bilateral discussions with leaders on pressing global security challenges, including the conflicts in Ukraine, in the Middle East, and strategic competition with China. As part of the delegation she spoke with Vice President Kamala Harris, Commander of the United States European Command General Christopher Cavoli, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, German Chancellor Olaf Scholtz, Executive Director of the UN World Food Programme Cindy McCain, and Yulia Navalnaya, widow of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
Congresswoman Sherrill continued on from Germany to the Middle East with House Armed Services Committee Ranking Member Adam Smith and Congressman Greg Landsman. They began their visit in Egypt where they received briefings from top security officials before heading to the Rafah crossing. There she saw firsthand the need for more aid trucks to reach the innocent Palestinians in Gaza.
Next, Sherrill went to Jordan where she met with Major General Yousef Al Hnaity to discuss how Jordan is supporting humanitarian efforts for Palestinians and the role Jordan plays in lasting peace in the region.
Her final stop was in Israel, where she met with leaders including U.S. Ambassador Jack Lew, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Foreign Minister Israel Katz, and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. As a veteran of the Global War on Terror, she pressed those leaders on the critical need for a shift in military strategy first and foremost ensures Israel’s security from future Hamas attacks – but also returns the hostages, protects innocent civilians in Gaza, and leads towards a two state solution that secures a better future for both Israelis and Palestinians.
Congresswoman Sherrill is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and served in the Navy for almost 10 years as a helicopter pilot and Russian policy officer. As a Russian policy officer, she worked on implementing our nuclear treaty obligations and oversaw the relationship between the US Navy and Russian Federation Navy. She now serves on the House Armed Services Committee and the new House Select Committee on Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
