Millburn High School Student Wins NJ-11 Congressional App Challenge

Parsippany, NJ — Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) announced today that Millburn High School student Andy Zhao is the winner of the 2023 Congressional App Challenge for New Jersey's 11th District for his app, “Sports Coaching and Training System.” 

The Sports Coaching and Training System app uses AI to review and analyze footage of fencers to provide them with live feedback on their form and build a detailed training plan. To watch a video explanation of the Sports Coaching and Training System app, click here.

“I am always blown away by the submissions in our yearly app challenge and the STEM capabilities of NJ-11 students. It is wonderful to see Andy merge his passion for fencing with his impressive coding skills to create this app to help students improve their form and performance,” said Rep Sherrill. “Congratulations Andy! Many thanks to our judges and all of our participants this year.”

The 2023 App Challenge winners are:

1st Place: "Sports Coaching and Training System" Andy Zhao, Millburn High School
2nd Place: "Serenity" Shriram Vasudevan and Sukanya Vasudevan, Morristown High School
3rd Place: "MindfulBites" Suvid Bordia, Newark Academy

74 students representing 21 schools participated in the App Challenge this year. Judges scored apps based on functionality, creativity, and user experience. The NJ-11 panel of judges included:

  • Johan Jacob, Barclays

The Congressional App Challenge, launched in 2014, is designed to engage student creativity and encourage their participation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education fields. The winner's App is eligible to be displayed in the U.S. Capitol Building and featured on the U.S. House of Representatives's website.
