ICYMI: Sherrill Stands with Emergency Physicians to Protect Access to Life-Saving Abortion Care

April 25, 2024

Sherrill Reacts to Oral Arguments in Idaho vs. United States

LIVINGSTON, N.J. – Today, Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) – along with Cooperman Barnabas Emergency Department physicians, hospital leadership, and local elected officials – spoke about the need to ensure patients can access life-saving abortion care in emergency situations. Sherrill’s advocacy comes as the Supreme Court heard oral arguments from anti-abortion politicians in Idaho, who are attempting to enforce the state’s near-total ban on abortion, even in emergency situations when the mother’s health is endangered.

“Today, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a case that could further restrict access to emergency abortion care in many states across the country – and the Court’s MAGA majority seems inclined to continue rolling back access to abortion, even in the most dire health care situations. That’s why I’m standing with New Jersey health care providers to underscore what’s at risk and why emergency abortion care saves lives,” said Sherrill. “It’s simple: Politicians should not be deciding whether pregnant women live or die. In fact, we can and should be doing more to improve women’s health and maternal health. We must be prepared and vigilant if the Supreme Court further chips away at reproductive health – to support maternal health, and to support doctors so they can provide life-saving emergency care when patients need it.”

Representative Sherrill continues to lead in the fight for women’s health in Congress. She stood up for servicewomen and military families against Senator Tommy Tuberville’s efforts to overturn the Department of Defense’s abortion travel policy. She has introduced legislation to promote education about women’s heart health, and has co-led a bill to ensure women can access a full year’s supply of contraceptives, rather than just three months at a time. Finally, she is leading efforts to end “judge shopping”a tactic used by anti-abortion advocates to gain favorable outcomes.
