ICYMI: Sherrill Highlights Impact of Child Tax Credit Expansion, Greater Need for Affordable Child Care

February 12, 2024

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) toured and hosted a press conference at the Clinton Hill Early Education Center in Newark on Friday focused on the House passed bipartisan tax legislation that boosts the Child Tax Credit (CTC), which she helped to expand through the American Rescue Plan. The expanded CTC expired in 2022.

Watch the livestream of the press conference here. At the event, Rep. Sherrill was joined by Senate Majority Leader Teresa Ruiz, Assemblywoman Eliana Pintor Marin, Essex County Commissioner A’Dorian Murray-Thomas, members of the Newark City Council, Clinton Hill Community Action, the Maher Charitable Foundation, New Jersey Institute for Social Justice, La Casa de Don Pedro, and NJAEYC.

“My focus in Congress is to lower costs and make life more affordable for New Jersey families.  I am proud to deliver on that mission by voting for this legislation that expands the Child Tax Credit. Child poverty was cut in half after House Democrats expanded this tax credit in 2021, and last week we moved a step closer to restoring this important lifeline,” said Rep. Sherrill. “It was inspiring to see the great work at the Clinton Hill Early Education Center to support neighborhood families by providing access to quality early education opportunities. I am thankful for the incredible partners who joined me today—elected officials, organizations, and advocates—to discuss this issue alongside the need for greater access to affordable child care. Together, we are building a brighter future for New Jersey families.”

“I was proud to vote for the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act, which expanded the Child Tax Credit to help hard-working, American families put food on the table,” said Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. “Also, I voted to support the expanded Child Tax Credit in the American Rescue Plan.  Now, we need to do more for American families and pass bills to create more affordable childcare for them. Too many parents struggle to find adequate childcare for their children. I am working with Rep. Sherrill and all my Democratic colleagues to find solutions to lower childcare costs and make life easier for all American families.”

Under current law, many low-income families do not make enough money to qualify for the full CTC or claim a credit for each of their children. With this deal, these low-income families will now be able to receive the CTC for each of their children. The deal also indexes the CTC to inflation, allowing most families to see an increase in their credit. This expansion will lift 400,000 children above the poverty line and benefit around 16 million children in low-income families in its first year of enactment, including 323,000 kids in New Jersey statewide.
