Rep. Sherrill Statement on Passage of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020

June 25, 2020

Washington, DC -- Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) today released the following statement on the passage of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020:

"A month ago, the brutal murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis shocked the conscience of this nation. And I promised New Jersey residents that I would act.

"The Justice in Policing Act will increase transparency, combat racial profiling, ban the use of chokeholds, improve training and data collection, and limit the access to weapons of war that do not belong on our streets.

"But, the ills of systemic racism and inequality in our country will not be cured through one piece of federal legislation. I remain committed to working with my constituents in the 11th District, the law enforcement community here in North Jersey, and my colleagues on both sides of the aisle in Congress.

"I've been so proud of how New Jerseyans across the state have come together to work for change. We have seen peaceful protests from Sussex to Essex, and the leadership of the students in our district has been particularly inspiring. New Jersey provides an example to the country of how we can work together to further our shared objectives of equality, respect, and safety. I join my colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus in urging the Senate to take up this legislation."

Representative Sherrill is a former Assistant U.S. Attorney and Outreach and Re-entry Coordinator at the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of New Jersey. She is an original co-sponsor of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.
