Rep. Sherrill: $91 Million in Federal Funding for Portal North, NEC Key to Our Region
Parsippany, NJ -- Representative Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) released the following statement on the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)’s $91 million allocation in federal funding to the Portal North Bridge and Northeast Corridor:
“Portal Bridge is a key component of the Gateway Project, a critical investment in our region, and a top priority for my district,” said Representative Sherrill. “This federal funding is another step in the right direction and will help us get shovels in the ground and support vital Northeast Corridor infrastructure. I will continue to work with the New Jersey delegation to make sure New Jersey’s transportation infrastructure needs are met and our commuters see our tax dollars come back to the state.”
The 110-year-old Portal North swing bridge often fails to close properly, and has led to extensive delays over the years on the nation’s busiest rail corridor.
Rep. Sherrill and the New Jersey delegation have pushed the Administration and Department of Transportation to release congressionally-directed funds to start this project for years. In February 2020, after successful pressure from Rep. Sherrill and the delegation, the Department of Transportation announced the rating for Portal North would be raised to medium high.
