Statement by Rep. Mikie Sherrill on AR-15 Ruling

LIVINGSTON, NJ – Today, Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill – a Navy veteran – released the following statement after a federal judge struck down New Jersey’s ban on AR-15 rifles: 

“I am not only a mother of four kids, but also a military veteran and certified expert shot. I was trained with weapons of war and know that AR-15s don’t belong on the streets of New Jersey. This decision — forced on New Jerseyans after the partisan Heller, McDonald, and Bruen decisions from the Supreme Court — will make families and children less safe. For decades, a campaign from right-wing activists and judges has undermined New Jersey’s strong and effective gun safety laws to the detriment of our citizens. This must end. 

“I will not rest until we fully ban assault weapons, require universal background checks for gun purchases, make secure storage accessible for all law-abiding gun owners, reform the Supreme Court, and realize a future where children and communities can live free from the deadly epidemic of gun violence.”
