Sherrill Tours Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, Discusses Innovative Approach to Education and the HEART Act

March 28, 2024

Nutley, NJ — Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11) toured the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine (HMSOM) on Tuesday to learn more about their mission to provide students with a medical education that is both innovative and deeply connected to the community surrounding the school. Rep. Sherrill met with Robert C. Garrett, CEO of Hackensack Meridian Health, Dr. Jeffrey Boscamp, President and Dean, Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, as well as first year medical students.

“With the creation of Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine back in 2018, the health network has expanded educational opportunities and healthcare experiences in our state. It was wonderful to tour the campus alongside leadership and speak with students about the hands-on experiences they’re having in the classroom and out in the community. HMSOM’s commitment to humanism and the importance of personal connection between doctors and their patients is commendable and will foster a new generation of physicians ready to meet the needs of our population,” said Rep. Sherrill.

"Congresswoman Sherrill is a terrific partner in improving the health of all people in New Jersey," said Robert C. Garrett, FACHE, the chief executive officer of Hackensack Meridian Health. "We are ecstatic to welcome her to the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, and to have her talk to our outstanding students and faculty. Her efforts especially in making the lives of women better and healthier through the HEART Act are a great undertaking in legislation which improve untold numbers of lives."

After the tour, Congresswoman Sherrill sat down with Dr. Taya Glotzer, electrophysiologist and Director of Cardiac Research at HUMC and a Professor of Medicine at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine for a Facebook Live conversation on the Congresswoman’s legislation, the HEART Act

"Congresswomen Sherrill understands the unique cardiovascular health needs of women. We are lucky to have her advocating for increased funding for research in women’s cardiac health," said Taya Glotzer, M.D., director of Cardiac Research and Hackensack University Medical Center and a professor of Medicine at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine. "She is a great partner in Congress, and an ally to the medical profession."

The HEART Act, introduced as part of the Congresswoman’s Jersey STRONG Agenda, establishes a grant program that will allow hospitals, community health centers, public health departments, and medical and health professional schools to design accredited Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs specific to heart disease in women to give our doctors the tools they need to treat women in our communities and address disparities in heart health care for women.
